Introduction

When Chris asked me if I wanted to review the new B.O.A.R. Piglet I snapped at the chance. Since my surgery I have been laying low so this would throw me back into the swing of things, plus I am always curious to review new companies. The B.O.A.R. Piglet is made in Switzerland and has received some bad publicity early on in the prototype stages for some striking similarities to the ILYY Mary, which in my eyes they have rectified with the final product. I am not going to get into that debate here; my goal is to review the yoyo. So lets see if the Piglet can hold its own.

Specs

  • Weight: 72g
  • Diameter: 48mm
  • Width: 36mm
  • Gap: 4mm
  • Bearing: Standard C-Sized Bearing
  • Response: Silicone

Construction

The Piglet is well made with no terrible machine marks or rough spots. It has a raw aluminum surface so it’s a perfect candidate for a custom anodizing job. The Piglet feels sturdy and it should at 72 grams this is no lightweight, more on this later. The silicone is perfectly applied and everything just seems like it was well constructed to the eye. The flat rims and undersized stature of the Piglet was a familiar theme for me. The spikes add just enough flash to round out the design. I think its a wonderful looking and feeling yoyo.

Weight

The Piglet should of been called the PIG, this yoyo is heavy. There is no way around it, 72 grams in my eyes is way to heavy for a yoyo and this is coming from a guy who loves heavier yoyos. It’s a bet chunky on the string and also a little lethargic due to the weight, which I will explain in detail later. This yoyo should be put on a diet; it would be wonderful at around 66-68.

Response and Bearing

The Piglets response is standard silicone and is applied extremely well, binds are snappy as you would expect with a silicone response, the bearing shipped cleaned and spins fantastic right out of the box, not to much to say here but a great combo of precision applied silicone and a good bearing just the way it should be.

Playability

As I stated before this yoyo needs to go on a diet. It is not a fast yoyo, it seems to want to hold you back as far as speed goes. It does play very nice don’t get me wrong, but its just too heavy. One thing I did notice is the yoyo had a tendency to want to turn on me, and we are not talking on the string or tilting, we’re talking if I threw a strong sleeper it would begin turning almost instantly as if one side was weighted different then the other, if this was just this yoyo or all of the Piglets I can not say. It’s not a huge issue on the string but its there. All in all I had a blast with the Piglet it does play well just slow, I threw this one longer then any other yoyo I have reviewed just to give it a fair shot. Whips and Hooks are a non-issue, neither is slacks or suicides, it plays like a high quality yoyo should just a lot slower. I like the Piglet and use it quite a bit as of late; it’s just got something unique about it.

Final Recommendation

The Piglet is a fun throw, it has a different feel due to the weight and size, it does perform well but a couple of issues are holding it back from being a great yoyo. If B.O.A.R. can cut the weight down, I think this would be a great yoyo to own, for their first effort I give them applause, I can not wait to see what they do next just don’t make it as heavy as the Piglet.
