Most definitely Ben Conde’s 4A performance. That kid’s got, as the cool kids like to say, swagger.
#2 by Josh Coghlin on August 11, 2011 - 1:55 pm
My favourite was definitely Jensens. It wasn’t crazy, it was art. He would’ve won AP with that. but I think he’s just trying to get the point across that if you don’t yoyo for fun, why yoyo?
#3 by Nick on August 11, 2011 - 1:56 pm
Jensen kimmitt,
his flow and smothness with the music and silence was mesmorizing
#4 by Derick on August 11, 2011 - 1:56 pm
Paul Kerbel. He went with the music, and horizontal play was cool.
#5 by Scott McMorris on August 11, 2011 - 1:56 pm
Takeshi Matsuura for sure.
#6 by KeenanSalzsauler on August 11, 2011 - 1:56 pm
Sebby Brock. His performance was revolutionary in the way I look at yoyos. And the bassalope is a beast yoyo.
#7 by Andy Jaracz on August 11, 2011 - 1:57 pm
Also Jensens. Really inspirational.
#8 by matthew on August 11, 2011 - 1:58 pm

Definitely the Brock performance. Too much fun to watch.
#12 by Blake Freeman on August 11, 2011 - 1:59 pm
Ben Conde by miles. Sure, lots of people had great performances, but his will go down as one of the greatest ever.
#13 by john on August 11, 2011 - 2:00 pm
Ben Condes 4a. So much swag it was on a different level.
#14 by John Dean on August 11, 2011 - 2:00 pm
Jensen Kimmitt!
#15 by Matt Marie on August 11, 2011 - 2:00 pm
My favorite freestyle of the contest has to go to Ben Conde, he took 4A to a new level of performance with his freestyle this year and in all honesty deserved higher than 4th place. BEN WON 4A IN OUR HEARTS!!!!
#16 by Blaine on August 11, 2011 - 2:01 pm
Takeshi Matsuura his 5A made me weep and all that horizontal play just blew my mind
#17 by Marcus on August 11, 2011 - 2:02 pm

#23 by Jose Mapa on August 11, 2011 - 2:05 pm
Mine was Jensen.
His performance was so different than the others. He gave art to the world of yoyoing. He was so amazing. He was just inspiring.
#24 by Keith on August 11, 2011 - 2:05 pm
Jensen… I liked how he went up there and did something differently- first the silence, and then how he wasn’t trying to win or throw a ridiculous fast freestyle, but rather throw the smoothest most visually appealing freestyle of the competition
#25 by Kyle Derry on August 11, 2011 - 2:06 pm
Jensen, no question.
#26 by Liz F. on August 11, 2011 - 2:06 pm
Charles Haycock, so smooth and awesome. Keep replaying the video.
#27 by Evan Perkins on August 11, 2011 - 2:06 pm
I think Takeshi Matsuura was my favorite although many were close behind his 5a was outrageous and spectacular, smooth just incredible tricks and style
#28 by Craig Hendzel on August 11, 2011 - 2:07 pm
I agree with the smoothness and flow of Jensen Kimmitt,I know nothing about throwing or swagger but when I break out my old plastic yo yo with the skull on it and my daughter watches it go up and down I have fun. I wish I had some skills to do what Brett does,I like watching him,he has determination written all over his face and the excitement level when he accomplishes his goal speaks volumes to me.
#29 by Tim S on August 11, 2011 - 2:07 pm

#38 by Chase on August 11, 2011 - 2:13 pm
My favorite performer overall was Takeshi Matsura. The kid is an absolute prodigy, he’s just amazing. He’s so young, yet he’s already a 3-time world champion and he still manages to bring something new to the stage every single year.
His performance this year was simply mind-blowing. (and I don’t even like 5A.)
#39 by frank short on August 11, 2011 - 2:15 pm
my favorite would have to be anyone with the balls to get up on that stage in front of all those people and perform without completely freezing up or vomiting on themselves.
#40 by Ben on August 11, 2011 - 2:16 pm
i would have to say jensen kimmits final at worlds it was really relaxed

Gentry Stein
#64 by Alex on August 11, 2011 - 2:48 pm
Jensen. I liked the fact that he made his FS into both a performance AND a message, instead of just trying to win. I find that to be quite high of him…even though I don’t think many of us actual understood the message he was trying to convey.
#65 by Louis on August 11, 2011 - 2:50 pm
Definately Jensen Kimmit, his freestyle was beautiful, it wasn’t fast paced or designed to win, but it was flowing and tranquil and frankly a pleasure to watch.
#66 by Mariano Blanco on August 11, 2011 - 2:52 pm

For 1a, Jensen Kimmitt, legendary performance.
For 2a, Shinji Saito, alien being? It’s his 12th world title right?
For 3a, Alex Hattori, man that kid got good really fast.
For 5a, Takeshi Matsuura, he’s just insanely good. But I also like Takuma Inoue. They’re both cool.

#119 by Daniel Flaherty on August 11, 2011 - 5:08 pm
Ben Conde!!!
#120 by Rilye on August 11, 2011 - 5:13 pm
Marcus Koh
Not because he got first but
He had the most riskyist freestyle and even thou he changed yoyos twice he got enough points to still beat sebby and gentry
#121 by Eli Segal on August 11, 2011 - 5:21 pm
Jensen Kimmitt definitely :)
#122 by Chris on August 11, 2011 - 5:23 pm
I liked Jensen Kimmitt’s the best. I didn’t realize until I watched it again that the only time he caught his yoyo was at the very end. Very nice!
But I also liked Sebastian Brock and Luis Enrique.
#123 by Daniel Wong on August 11, 2011 - 5:24 pm
Luis Enrique :)

I hate to say the one everyone is saying but Jensen’s FS was just incredible. I love that he could have won, and he knew it, but he didn’t want to win.

#128 by Joel Jansen on August 11, 2011 - 5:35 pm
I just loved the way Jensen Kimmitt did his freestyle in one singe motion without stoping to relax for even a second. That’s what I call Skills :)

Charles Haycoc, great performance…

Hank freeman!
#140 by Travis Strenge on August 11, 2011 - 6:11 pm
Hands down, Sebastian Brock. I hate speed players, and I think the results should have been different. Style is an expression of ones self, and I think you lose style by playing fast and vise versa. Make out look good like Brock!
#141 by Rob Byrd on August 11, 2011 - 6:11 pm
It was a toss up between the Speed and Precision of Gentry Stein and the Smooth String Dancing of Charles Haycock
#142 by tim on August 11, 2011 - 6:11 pm
gentry stein or jensen kimmit
#143 by Cameron O'Neill on August 11, 2011 - 6:12 pm
Sebastian Brock. Period.
#144 by Nathanael on August 11, 2011 - 6:14 pm
Well, if Brett was in it, I would say him. But since he wasn’t I would have to with Hiroyuki Suzuki. He’s been my favourite because he started me yo-yoing :D
#145 by Collin De Kalb on August 11, 2011 - 6:16 pm
Definitely Ben Conde’s. It was so awesome and fun to watch
#146 by Preston smith on August 11, 2011 - 6:19 pm
Sabastion Brock if I win I want it custom painted
but I won’t say a specific color just make it cool like u always do to ur yo-yos
#147 by sarah on August 11, 2011 - 6:22 pm
jesen kimmit all the way!
#148 by Tommy K on August 11, 2011 - 6:23 pm
it was Ben Conde’s performance. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
#149 by Daniel Sudhoff on August 11, 2011 - 6:23 pm
Takahiko Hasagawa. It’s not a matter of skill, but a matter of how well choreographed his AP performance was, the man’s a bloody artistic genus.
As far as the actual freestyles go, I really liked Bryan Figerora’s a bunch.(Apologies if I misspelled that.) I liked Ben Conde’s freestyle but I dislike how minimalist it felt, a bunch of posturing, not too many tricks (Hard tricks they where, though, that’s for sure.) But I did love the “swag” he had, even if I don’t understand it too well myself.
#150 by Graham Mcginn on August 11, 2011 - 6:24 pm
jensen kimmit, was so amazing, i’m not into contests, and his free style was just him having fun :)
#151 by JohnHale on August 11, 2011 - 6:28 pm

#162 by alex Jones on August 11, 2011 - 7:07 pm
jensen kimmit. his style not only was other-worldly, he truely expressed the original purpose of the meaning of a yoyo. an art. something that presents true self expression and part or your inner self being translated into a sequence of tricks. today that wonderful art has been deluted by the poison of a contest. no longer about what makes you. only about what scores the most points.
#163 by Matt Scott on August 11, 2011 - 7:16 pm
Alex Hattori. So talented.
#164 by Dennis B. on August 11, 2011 - 7:18 pm
Easily Sebby’s performance. His tricks were so fun to watch, despite not being the most complicated ever they were still mesmerizing.

#168 by Gsteller on August 11, 2011 - 7:34 pm
I’d have to say that my personal favorite would have to be Jensen’s, or Takuma’s 5a. I think that his 5a is just mesmerizing.

I pretty much agree with everyone else on which freestyles were the best, so I’ll state my favorite that wasn’t one of those. Liu Yi Chen rules. He is the master of suicides and asian pops.

However this year my favorite freestyle was definately Gentry Stein I definately do not see how sebastians freestyle out scored Gentry what are the criteria these judges are looking at?

Sebastian Brock, or Marcus Koh.
I like the feel of Jensen Kimmitt’s but he didn’t surprise me other than that it was all “one throw” and he asked for silence. Brock’s and Koh’s were surprising to me. They showcased tricks I had never seen before, concepts I had never really seen before.

#312 by William Barker on August 13, 2011 - 3:20 am
Luis Enrique was a real surprise for me and I think for 1a he was my favorite. I don’t really know much about 2a so I don’t really have a favorite for that. 3a I liked Patrick Bogerding. For 4a Ben Conde pulled out an incredible performance. 5a is tough as I liked both Takeshi and Takuma but Takuma is my favorite. Overall my favorite is Ben Conde for sure

#323 by Francis Julien on August 13, 2011 - 10:20 am
I didn’t see them all but if I had to choose between Sebastian Brock and Marcus Koh, I would have to go with Marcus because he had a much more ”risky” competition routine with all his suicides and body tricks. He’s also very fast but not too much so you can still see his tricks.
#324 by isaac on August 13, 2011 - 10:37 am
I liked Jensen Kimmitt it had an unusual flow but i liked it

My Fave Freestyle has gotta be between Jensen Kimmitt and Hank Freeman. They both showed a level of mastery in their own divisions and both brought a new view on both 1a and 3a styles.

#350 by HiggsBoson on August 13, 2011 - 9:28 pm
Jensen kimmit was my fav. ben conde as runner up.
imo jensen wasnt yoyoing to please anyone, and what he did was the way he wanted, not for the crowd.
but his style is just so effortless and smooth, so he wins because of the swag points.
#351 by Scott on August 13, 2011 - 9:39 pm

#363 by Adam on August 14, 2011 - 6:46 am
Sebastian Brock is definitely the right answer. He has great tricks, and he plays his way. He can do crazy sideways stuff (and has since ’07) but he decided not to play to the current trends, and still pulled off 2nd place. That’s just inspiring.

I’m new to yo-yo, but I thought Jensen’s was pretty sweet. Smooth music, smooth style. I hope people move in that direction, less speed, more style. At least that’s what I’m focusing on as I learn new tricks!
#403 by Justin on August 15, 2011 - 3:10 am
Jensen Kimmett from what I have seen. He always looks like he’s having fun too, which is really great!

#411 by Steve J on August 15, 2011 - 2:45 pm
I had three favorites Jensen Kimmit, Sebastian Brock, and Gentry Stein
1. Jensen Kimmit’s routine, flawless, and super confident, only brought out one throw
2. Sebastian Brock, Flawless, Super Duper Creative
3. Gentry Stein, Flaw less, was fairly fast, usually i don’t like fast routines because I can’t see what’s going on, he had good speed, with good balance and blend i thought
#412 by Michael on August 15, 2011 - 4:50 pm
Ben Conde, for sure.
#413 by Alex W. on August 15, 2011 - 5:15 pm
After disappearing after cal states it was really great to see Jensen perform again. like many have said it borders an art, and I think it would have won him AP. With that said though I think that my favorite performance was Sebby, because it was really creative and not too over the top:)
#414 by Connor on August 15, 2011 - 5:52 pm

There were way too many amazing performances this year…my favorites were Ben Conde’s, Kimmit’s, and Sebby’s. Marcus Koh was amazing too, I just wish it had been cleaner.
I gotta go with Kimmit overall though. Of all the performers, he had the most unique and outstanding performance.

I believe jensen kimmitt was my fevorite. In my personal opinion he brought yo-yoing at its best. The way he executed his tricks was amazing but what made it great was the vibe. He was one of the only yo-yoers to show his performance as an art not an entry as the first place winner.

#541 by Bas de Rijk on August 29, 2011 - 10:53 am
I think that would be marcus koh, not because he got the first place, but because he makes a couple of mistakes and still remains calm and yoyos as well as he did at the start
#542 by Scott G. on August 29, 2011 - 8:09 pm

Jensen kimmit. Jensen is what/who peaked my interest in yoyo’s. I’m an older guy returning to this great community who has nobody but jensen’s style and charisma to thank!
#563 by Ryan Lian on September 2, 2011 - 10:17 pm
For sure is Jensen his is really smooth and follow the rhythm of the song, the first time i watch him play i was like “This guy’s good man” so definitely he should have gotten better place than 9th
